SEO, AEO & GEO: how your website gets found

Category Visibility · Updated September 2026

Your customers no longer search only on Google. They also ask voice assistants and AI tools like ChatGPT. SEO, AEO and GEO make sure your website shows up in all of those places.

01In short

All three terms share the same goal: when someone looks for an offer like yours, they should end up with you. The difference is where they're looking.

  • SEO · Search Engine OptimizationYour website appears as high as possible in the search results of Google, Bing and others.
  • AEO · Answer Engine OptimizationYour content is shown as the direct answer, for example in the highlighted box on Google or as the reply of a voice assistant.
  • GEO · Generative Engine OptimizationAI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews know your business and mention it in their answers.

The three build on each other: without a solid SEO foundation, AEO and GEO barely work. Much of what helps Google understand your website also helps AI systems.

02SEO: getting found in search engines

Search engines constantly crawl the internet and rank websites by how well they match a search. SEO makes sure your website is technically clean and that its content clearly shows what you offer and where.

What it involvesPage titles & descriptionsFast loadingMobile layoutClean page structureSitemap & indexingLocal details

The goal: when someone searches for, say, “carpenter Frauenfeld”, your website should be on the first page, not the fifth.

03AEO: being the direct answer

More and more often, people don't click on a search result at all. They read the answer right at the top of Google or hear it from Siri or Alexa. AEO prepares your content so search engines can use it as exactly that answer.

What it involvesClear question-and-answer copyFAQ sectionsStructured data (Schema.org)Machine-readable contact details

This page is an example itself: the frequently asked questions below are marked up so search engines and AI tools can use them directly as answers.

04GEO: showing up in AI answers

Many people now ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly, for example: “Which electrician in Frauenfeld is open on Saturday?” The AI puts its answer together from information it finds online. GEO makes sure your business is found, understood correctly and mentioned.

What it involvesAccess for AI crawlersllms.txtClear facts about your businessConsistent details everywhereQuotable content

GEO is a young field and changes quickly. AI providers keep adjusting which sources they rely on and how much. That's exactly why it isn't something you do once and then forget about.

05Set it up once or keep it maintained?

One-time

The technical foundation

We set up everything that makes your website understandable to search engines and AI: structure, titles and descriptions, structured data, sitemap, loading speed and access for AI crawlers. This foundation stays in place, even without further maintenance.

Monthly plan

Ongoing care

We keep an eye on your visibility and adapt to whatever changes: at Google, in AI tools, among your competitors and in your own offering. That way your website is not just well set up, it also stays well placed.

Why a one-time setup often isn't enough in the long run:

  • Google changes its ranking criteria several times a year, AI tools even more often
  • Your competitors optimize too and can overtake you
  • Content goes out of date: prices, offers, opening hours, team
  • Your customers ask new questions that your website doesn't answer anywhere yet
  • Technical issues creep in unnoticed, like broken links or oversized images
  • Without regular measuring, nobody knows what's working and what isn't

A one-time setup is still a good start, and for some businesses it is entirely enough. Which option fits depends on how much your website contributes to winning new customers.

06What we take care of with the monthly plan

With the monthly plan, you don't have to deal with search engines and AI tools yourself. We look after it regularly and get in touch when something needs your attention.

  • Technical checks of your website: availability, loading speed, errors, indexing
  • Adjustments to new requirements from Google and AI search engines
  • Maintaining structured data, FAQs and business details
  • Adding and updating content based on real search queries
  • Checking whether and how your business appears in AI answers
  • A short, easy-to-read report on what has changed
  • Predictable costsA fixed monthly amount instead of one-off jobs whenever something suddenly stops working.
  • No expertise neededYou don't have to follow what's changing at Google or ChatGPT right now. That's our job.
  • Prevent instead of repairWe spot problems early, before your website slips in the results.
  • One point of contactWe know your website and your offering. No onboarding for every request, no detours.

07Which option pays off for whom?

One-time is enough

If your website is mainly a business card

New customers mostly come through referrals, your offering rarely changes and you have little direct competition in your region.

Monthly plan pays off

If your website should bring in customers

New inquiries should come through Google and AI tools, you're in a competitive market, or you offer several services, products or locations.

Typical for the planLocal service providersTradesPractices & consultingOnline shopsRestaurants & hotelsMultiple locations

As a rule of thumb: if just one or two extra customer inquiries a month would cover the cost, the monthly plan usually pays off.

08Frequently asked questions

How quickly will I see results?

Technical improvements often take effect within a few weeks. Better rankings usually build up over several months, because search engines and AI tools don't re-evaluate websites every day. SEO is more of a marathon than a sprint.

Can you guarantee the top spot on Google?

No, and nobody can honestly promise that. Google and AI providers decide for themselves what they show. We make sure your website brings the best possible conditions.

Do I really need GEO already?

More and more people search through AI tools instead of Google, and that share keeps growing. The basics overlap heavily with SEO, so the extra effort is modest. If you lay a clean foundation now, you're prepared as that share keeps rising.

What happens if I end the monthly plan?

The foundation that was set up stays fully in place and your website keeps working as normal. Only the ongoing checks and adjustments stop.

Does this work for a static website too?

Yes, very well in fact. Static websites load fast and are technically simple, and search engines rate both of those positively.

Do I have to write the content myself?

No. It helps if you tell us which questions your customers often ask and what sets you apart from the competition. We take care of the wording.

Still unclear?

Write to us at hello@brotherlabs.ch and we'll look at your website and tell you which option fits you.
